.MUSEUM becomes more accessible

.MUSEUM is one of the older top-level domains and was launched in 2001 as the first so-called sponsored top-level domain, catering exclusively to Museums and museum associations as defined by International Council of Museums (ICOM).In the beginning registration was only allowed at third level beneath generic. Some of these domains still exist even though it was many years since the registry opened for second level registrations.

.MUSEUM now relieves the rules and makes the domain more accessible

  • The registry removes some eligibility requirements and allows all companies as private individuals with a link to the professional museum work in general to register.
  • The registry also raises the naming requirement and allows registration of generic terms
  • Finally, the registry closes the ability to register at third level. Those registered will remain as long as they are renewed. However, the recommendation is to register directly at second level instead.
